- Description: Not every USB-C cable can do video, charge at 240W, or hit 80Gbps — even though they all look the same. Here's how to read the specs and pick the right one.

Every USB-C cable looks identical, but the one fast-charging your phone might be useless with your monitor. The catch: **USB-C is just the connector shape.** Speed and power come from the *protocol* (USB 2.0, USB 3.x, USB4, Thunderbolt) and how many wires are inside — so two same-looking cables can behave completely differently. Here's what the labels and logos mean, in plain English. Prices verified October 18, 2026.

## USB Speeds in 2026

- **USB 5Gbps / 10Gbps / 20Gbps** — older USB 3-era speeds, still common on budget cables.
- **USB4 40Gbps** — the modern baseline for fast cables; also works with Thunderbolt 4.
- **USB4 80Gbps** (USB4 version 2) — the newest USB spec, doubling bandwidth to 80 Gbps.
- **Thunderbolt 5** — Intel's standard, built on USB4 v2: 80 Gbps both directions, up to 120 Gbps toward the display ("Bandwidth Boost") for high-refresh 4K and 8K monitors.

Everything negotiates down to the weakest link: a 40 Gbps cable in a 10 Gbps port gives you 10 Gbps.

## Charging: Watts and the 240W Ceiling

Charging power is measured in **watts** — higher watts means faster charging, if your device can take it. For years USB-C topped out at 100W; then **USB Power Delivery 3.1** with **Extended Power Range (EPR)** raised the ceiling to **240W** (48 volts at 5 amps), enough for gaming and workstation laptops.

The cable needs an **E-marker chip** confirming it can carry 240W, or the charger plays it safe at lower power. And a 240W cable charges your 25W phone exactly like a 60W one would — the rating is a ceiling, not a firehose.

## Why Some Cables Can't Do Video

Video over USB-C uses **DisplayPort Alt Mode**: the cable repurposes some data wires to carry a display signal. Those wires are optional, and cheap charging cables often skip them — wiring only the basic USB 2.0 pins for power plus slow 480 Mbps data.

If your cable charges fine but the monitor stays black, the cable is the likely culprit. For video you need a **full-featured** cable — which is exactly what USB4 and Thunderbolt cables are, and a big reason they cost more.

## The Logos That Tell the Truth

Look for two logos on certified cables and packaging: a **speed logo** ("USB4 40Gbps", "USB4 80Gbps", "USB 20Gbps", "USB 10Gbps", "USB 5Gbps") and a **power logo** ("60W" or "240W"). Both logos means the cable was independently tested. No logos? The specs are the manufacturer's word alone — fine from a reputable brand, a gamble from a no-name one.

## What to Buy

### Cable Matters Thunderbolt 5 Cable

The closest thing to a cable that does everything: 80 Gbps data, up to 240W charging, and video for dual 6K or single 8K displays in one 3.3 ft cord. Intel-certified for Thunderbolt 5, 4/3, USB4, and USB-C.

- **Standout features:**
  - 80 Gbps data; up to 120 Gbps video bandwidth with Bandwidth Boost
  - 240W USB PD 3.1 charging with E-marker chip
  - Intel-certified; backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4/3, USB4, USB-C
- **Price & where to buy:** $32.99 as of October 18, 2026 at [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CP8K1C59?tag=stackandvalue-20&ref=stackandvalue.com)

## Bottom Line

USB-C describes the plug; the cable inside decides the speed, the charging ceiling, and whether video works. Check for certified speed and wattage logos, then match the cable to the job: a full-featured USB4 or Thunderbolt cable for docks and monitors, a cheap 60W cable for everything else.
