Good noise cancelling is no longer a luxury feature reserved for $500 flagships. The four picks below cover every budget, from Sony's latest flagship to a budget model that costs less than a third of it. Every price was verified on October 10, 2026.

## Quick picks

- **Best for comfort and calls:** Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — famously comfortable with superb voice pickup.
- **Best for Apple users:** Apple AirPods Max (USB-C) — deep ecosystem integration, at a premium price.
- **Best budget pick:** Sony WH-CH720N — real noise cancelling for under $200.

## How we picked

- Street price verified the day of publication
- Active noise cancelling (ANC) as a core feature on every pick

### Sony WH-1000XM6 — Best overall

![Sony WH-1000XM6](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d1/48/d148fb79-6d18-4645-a527-3ef2cd4c2927/content/images/2026/10/01-sony-wh-1000xm6-1.jpg)

The WH-1000XM6 is Sony's current flagship and the most complete package in this roundup. It uses 12 microphones to feed its noise-cancelling system, delivers detailed sound with a lightweight carbon-fiber driver, and supports LDAC for higher-quality Bluetooth audio. Battery life is about 30 hours with ANC on, and a 3-minute charge gives roughly 3 hours of playback.

**Standout features:**

- Industry-leading ANC with 12 microphones and real-time adaptive processing
- LDAC hi-res Bluetooth codec support for higher-quality wireless audio
- Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint (stay connected to phone and laptop)
- \~30 hours battery with ANC on; fast charging via USB-C
- Folds flat, includes carrying case and wired cable

**Price & where to buy:** $378 at Best Buy (on sale, regularly $458), as of October 10, 2026 — [See the WH-1000XM6 at Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/product/sony-wh-1000xm6-best-wireless-noise-cancelling-headphones-black/J7XSRH5RCF/sku/6620467?ref=stackandvalue.com) | [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F3PQHWTZ?tag=stackandvalue-20&ref=stackandvalue.com)

**Who it's for:** Frequent travelers and anyone who wants the best all-around noise cancelling without stepping into the Apple ecosystem.

### Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — Best for comfort and calls

![Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d1/48/d148fb79-6d18-4645-a527-3ef2cd4c2927/content/images/2026/10/02-bose-qc-ultra-2nd-gen-1.jpg)

The second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are Bose's answer to the XM6, and they remain the comfort benchmark — the plush fit and light clamping force work well for all-day wear. Bose's noise cancelling is superb, and its voice pickup during calls is consistently among the best in the category. The 2nd Gen adds spatialized audio for a more immersive listening mode.

**Standout features:**

- Bose's top-tier noise cancellation with spatialized audio mode
- Excellent microphone quality for calls and voice assistants
- Plush, lightweight fit suited to long listening sessions
- \~24 hours battery with ANC on; USB-C fast charging
- Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint connection

**Price & where to buy:** $369 at Best Buy (on sale, regularly $449), as of October 10, 2026 — [See the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones at Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/product/bose-quietcomfort-ultra-headphones-2nd-gen-wireless-noise-cancelling-over-ear-headphones-with-immersive-audio-driftwood-sand/J7C5V6W785/sku/6642775?ref=stackandvalue.com) | [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FDKR293G?tag=stackandvalue-20&ref=stackandvalue.com)

**Who it's for:** People who wear headphones all day or take lots of calls — comfort and voice clarity are the deciding factors here.

### Apple AirPods Max (USB-C) — Best for Apple users

![Apple AirPods Max (USB-C)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d1/48/d148fb79-6d18-4645-a527-3ef2cd4c2927/content/images/2026/10/03-apple-airpods-max-1.jpg)

The AirPods Max remain the premium pick for anyone deep in the Apple ecosystem. Spatial audio with head tracking, automatic switching between Apple devices, and the Digital Crown volume control make them feel seamless with an iPhone, Mac, or Apple TV. The USB-C version replaced the older Lightning model and also enables lossless audio over a wired USB-C connection. The tradeoffs: they are heavy compared to the Sony and Bose, they don't fold flat, and they cost more than either.

**Standout features:**

- Deep Apple ecosystem integration: auto-switching, spatial audio with head tracking
- USB-C charging plus lossless audio over USB-C wired connection
- Strong noise cancellation driven by nine microphones
- \~20 hours battery with ANC on
- Premium aluminum build and Digital Crown control

**Price & where to buy:** $549.99 at Best Buy, as of October 10, 2026 — [See the AirPods Max at Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/product/apple-airpods-max-usb-c-purple/JJGCQ3Z422/sku/6550080?ref=stackandvalue.com) | [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DGJJDFPR?tag=stackandvalue-20&ref=stackandvalue.com)

**Who it's for:** Committed Apple users who value seamless device switching and spatial audio — and don't mind paying a premium for it.

### Sony WH-CH720N — Best budget pick

![Sony WH-CH720N](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d1/48/d148fb79-6d18-4645-a527-3ef2cd4c2927/content/images/2026/10/04-sony-wh-ch720n.jpg)

The WH-CH720N delivers genuine active noise cancelling for well under $200, which is the main reason it earns a spot. You give up some refinement versus the XM6 — fewer microphones, no LDAC, simpler build — but the core experience (quiet, comfortable, long battery) is intact. Battery life is actually the best of the group at about 35 hours with ANC on.

**Standout features:**

- Active noise cancelling with ambient sound mode
- \~35 hours battery with ANC on — longest in this roundup
- Bluetooth 5.2 with multipoint connection
- Lightweight design with adjustable earcups
- USB-C fast charging (3 minutes for about 1 hour of playback)

**Price & where to buy:** $178 at Best Buy, as of October 10, 2026 — [See the WH-CH720N at Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/product/sony-whch720n-wireless-noise-canceling-headphones-black/J7XSRH53Q5/sku/6533162?ref=stackandvalue.com) | [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS1QCFHX?tag=stackandvalue-20&ref=stackandvalue.com)

**Who it's for:** Anyone who wants real noise cancelling on a tight budget — students, commuters, and first-time ANC buyers.

## ANC vs passive isolation, explained

Noise reduction in headphones comes from two different things working together.

**Passive isolation** is simply the physical seal of the earcups blocking sound — the same reason putting your hands over your ears helps. Over-ear headphones with plush cushions do this better than on-ears, and a good seal helps high-pitched sounds like voices.

**Active noise cancelling (ANC)** uses tiny microphones to listen to the noise around you, then generates an inverted "anti-noise" wave that cancels part of it out. There are two microphone strategies:

- **Feedforward** mics sit on the outside of the earcup and hear noise before it reaches your ear. They react quickly to incoming sounds.
- **Feedback** mics sit inside the earcup, near the driver, and listen to what's actually reaching your ear, correcting whatever the outside mics missed.

Most modern flagships — including the Sony XM6 and the Bose above — use both at once, which is why their noise cancelling handles a wider range of sounds. One limit stays the same no matter how good the system is: ANC excels at steady, low-frequency drone (plane engines, air conditioners, train rumble) and does far less for sudden, sharp sounds like a dog barking or a dropped pan. For those, the physical seal matters most.

## Verdict

**Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM6.** At $378 on sale, it is the strongest total package — the best noise cancelling of the four, LDAC support, 30-hour battery, and it undercuts both the Bose and the AirPods Max. Choose the **Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen)** if comfort and call quality matter most to you; at $369 it's priced almost identically. The **AirPods Max** only make sense if you're firmly in the Apple ecosystem and willing to pay for it. And if the budget is tight, the **Sony WH-CH720N at $178** gets you genuine ANC and the longest battery life of the group.
